Four-star hope

TO CONGRESS for passing legislation that makes the head of the National Guard Bureau a four-star. For too many years, the Guard Bureau’s voice has not been equal to its contribution to the war effort. Because it is headed by a three-star, it is excluded from the policymaking table when critical decisions on funding, equipment and resources are being made at the highest levels. Elevating the Guard Bureau chief to four stars is an important first step in empowering the Guard. But much more needs to be done. As the Army calls for more and more from its Guard and Reserve components — the buzzword is “operationalize” — then it must also give more in real terms. The citizen soldier who fights side-by-side with his active soldier brother deserves to be equally well-trained, equipped and cared for.
